Adventure bikes are rapidly gaining popularity and attracting interest from touring enthusiasts, and it’s easy to see why. This class of bikes is like the SUV of the two-wheeled world because they do it all, making them the most practical segment of motorcycles. While trail riding can be done on any bike, adventure bikes offer extra comfort, performance, and versatility, making long-haul rides more enjoyable. And, unlike modern SUVs, they’re actually fun to drive off-road. Plus, in addition to sport cruisers and hikers, ADVs are as comfortable as you’ll get on the pavement.

The motorcycle market is flooded with incredible options, and top manufacturers are constantly refreshing older models while releasing new products to market in an effort to outdo themselves. This competition is good news for riders looking for the ADV experience. Regardless of experience level, riding needs or budget, there is an ADV option for everyone. Here’s our pick of the best adventure bikes to buy in 2022.

The Tuareg 660 is the latest arrival on the ADV market and Aprilia’s return to the adventure fold. This, alongside Harley-Davidson’s Pan America, is sure to shake up this segment. The Italian marque was heavily involved in the Dakar Rally in the 80s and 90s, with icons like the Touareg Wind 600. KTM are the kings of the ADV segment, with many adventure riders racing their KTMs around the world. KTM’s dominance in the Dakar Rally with 18 consecutive wins since 2001 shows they know their stuff. The KTM 390 is their entry-level model, and it’s a winner in the segment. It has a liquid-cooled, single-cylinder 737.2cc engine, the same as the bare brother, the KTM 390 Duke.

With 43hp, there’s plenty of power to navigate any terrain, but not too scary for new riders. Plus, at 379 lbs, the bike is fairly easy to upgrade.

seven Yamaha Tenere 700

The Tenere 700
Through Yamaha

In only its fourth model year, the Tenere 700 has already earned a reputation as a big bike built for the dirt. This seemed to have solved the problems faced by fat adventure bikes. It weighs 454 pounds compared to the larger Super Tenere at 575 pounds. And the weight difference is stark, as it feels manageable and unintimidating compared to similarly sized Advs. Plus, it’s quick, with power delivered smoothly from the liquid-cooled 689cc parallel twin. Yamaha added a pair of Brembo brakes to boost your confidence.

The Yamaha T7 is also reasonably priced with a $9,999 sticker, and you’re guaranteed to be a capable off-road performer.

Another arrival of all-new entries in the ADV segment is Husqvarna’s first road adventure bike. Since KTM owns the brand, it’s no surprise that the Norden 901 shares a lot of DNA with KTM’s 890 Adventure bikes, including the 889cc parallel twin. This engine is lightweight and capable beyond the adventure world, as it is proven to perform on both asphalt and dirt, as evidenced by the 890 Duke naked bike and 8RC racer.

However, the rally-inspired Norden 901 differentiates itself from its KTM cousins by having longer suspension travel with 215mm and 220mm than KTM’s 200mm. The bike comes with traction control, quick shifter, cornering ABS and a huge 19 liter tank for extended range.

The new 1160cc triple engine borrows from the Speed Triple RS architecture and produces 147 hp and 96 lb-ft of torque, with plenty of power available in the midrange.

For the 2022 model year, Honda has implemented revolutionary changes to the new Africa Twin. This DCT is now much more refined, with improvements in the shifting in the lower gears.

All versions come with a rear cargo platform exclusive to Adventure Sport ES in previous models. 2022 is truly an overhaul year, as KTM undertook a top-to-bottom overhaul for its new 1290 Super Adventure R model. Topping the substantial list of upgrades is a new frame with a longer swingarm and a full suite of electronics aimed at ensuring rider safety while allowing for as much fun as you let it go.

The new three-piece tank stores fuel much lower than before, lowering the center of gravity and therefore better handling, all the more so off-road. The seat is also half an inch lower, and also, the bike weighs lighter than the previous model. These changes may seem trivial, but they now put this bike in a better position to compete with BMW’s GS.

2 Ducati DesertX

Ducati-DesertX
by Ducati

Ducati has been offering the Multistrada bike for quite some time now, and while it’s a top-level ADV that has built up a loyal cult fanbase for its ballistic engine and top-end handling, it doesn’t. It hasn’t always been the best off-road. Yes, the Enduro version is a capable off-roader, but Ducati has gone all out with the new rally-style DesertX.

The Ducati DesertX is powered by a 110hp version of the 937cc L-Twin engine from the Multistrada V2. However, the package is lightweight, weighing in at 492 pounds, which clearly targets the middleweight segment. The retro-styled bike is also Ducati’s first modern model with 21-inch front wheels and 18-inch rear wheels. It will be a rugged, simple, minimalistic and hopefully capable adventure bike for Ducati.

BMW’s very first ADV launched this segment more than four decades ago. They’ve remained strong contenders for best-in-class over the years, and the latest model is even better. Even though it hasn’t undergone drastic changes like its rival KTM, BMW has made small tweaks to the new bike which retained the previous mechanical and technical specifications. However, that’s a good thing since the latest model has been great so far.

Despite the ongoing pandemic, Royal Enfield (RE) had another bumper year in terms of sales, having sold 73,739 motorcycles for the domestic and export markets – and that is only for December 2021. Nationally , RE sales fell less than half a percent for the whole of 2021, international exports were excellent, reaching a whopping 135.23% from last year’s total exports.

This year, it’s no surprise that Indians are capitalizing on those sales numbers and are expected to launch a few new motorcycles around the world.

Bobber, scrambler and a 650cc cruiser

According to local Indian news sources, the Chennai-based manufacturer will offer some new models for domestic and international markets. These include a bobber, jammer, and an increasingly large Meteor cruiser.

Scram 411

For starters, the Himalayan will now get a few new cosmetic tweaks to become a scrambler motorcycle. First spied on in August 2021, the Scram 411 will feature slightly modified body panels, 19-inch front and 17-inch rear dual sport wheels with optional alloy rims, and a Bluetooth-enabled digital / analog panel that is possibly shared with the Meteor 350.

Hunter 350

According to reports, the next Hunter 350 will be based on the Meteor 350, but the overall ride ergonomics are slightly updated to be similar to a true universal Japanese motorcycle – or more commonly referred to here in the PH as “standard motorcycle” .

Upcoming Royal Enfields for 2022: image of a bobber, scrambler and 650cc cruiser

The engine, transmission, suspension and even the brakes should be the same as the Meteor 350.

Bobber

Based on the Meteor 350, the upcoming Bobber 350 will still share many of its components with the Meteor, but will feature a unique (and lower) seat configuration, large white-walled tires, and raised handlebars.

Cruiser 650

At last year’s EICMA, RE showcased its radical concept based on the Interceptor 650. Named SG650 Concept, it celebrates both the past and the present of the RE brand and allowed his team to bring them to life. combine creatively in future models.

Upcoming Royal Enfields for 2022: image of a bobber, scrambler and 650cc cruiser

The upcoming cruiser will share many of the Interceptor’s components such as the engine, chassis, electronics, and even wire wheels.

With just a few tweaks to make it practical for production line crafting, the appearance of the upcoming Cruiser 650 might not be far removed from what we saw in last year’s EICMA.

650cc himalayan

What about the Himalayan based on the Interceptor 650? Sadly, it looks like this model was still somebody’s imagination when they rendered it on their computer. In November of last year, Royal Enfield Quezon City opened its doors to customers. During the Q&A with RE executives (via Zoom), we asked if a 650cc version of the Himalayan was in development and their answer was an emphatic no.

Upcoming Royal Enfields for 2022: image of a bobber, scrambler and 650cc cruiser

But who knows? If Royal Enfield fans can generate enough noise, especially on social media, maybe Chennai would listen to them.

When the all-new Karoo 3 was first announced in 2012, there were fewer tire options for the off-road-loving adventurer. Now the incoming fire of competitors comes from all directions. After 9 years, the Karoo 3 clearly deserves an update. Now Metzeler is ready to fire back with his announcement of the all-new Karoo 4.

Like its predecessor, the Karoo 4 is designed for adventure and mixed-sport riders looking for good off-road performance and longevity in a 50/50 tire. The new rubber sits between the Karoo Street and the Karoo Extreme in Metzeler’s dual sport tire lineup. When developing the new rubber, Metzeler says they relied on their “state-of-the-art technologies and processes” to extend the Karoo’s versatility even further across the dirt and street spectrum.

The new tire features a new patented tread pattern, which representatives say increases the tire’s overall performance levels on asphalt and different types of off-road surfaces. Gone is the old herringbone tread design, replaced by a more knobby pattern with center blocks that dig into the dirt directly. The new tread design definitely has a more aggressive off-road look with larger cutouts and alternate side knobs that would seem to clean better on soft terrain than the old Karoo 3.

Metzeler says their new design is intended to increase the level of off-road performance, especially on soft surfaces, such as sand, mud and clay. On the road side, the engineers have worked to improve in particular the overall handling and the behavior on wet ground, in particular leaning on the edge of the tire. And hopefully the longevity of the Karoo has been maintained or improved, but that remains to be seen.

The new Karoo 4 will be available for sale from March 2022 with a range of sizes for medium and large size adventure bikes with 19″/17″ or 21″/18″ wheel combos. We look forward to trying out the successor to the Karoo 3 in the new year!

Italian motorcycle manufacturer Ducati has presented a new model better designed for off-road travel and fans of “adventure motorcycles”, also known as “ADV motorcycles” or “dual sport”, could not be. happier.

Called Ducati DesertX, the 110 horsepower machine features styling that pays homage to Ducati’s desert racing machines of the 1980s while being fully up to street standards and cutting edge in technology and performance.

The DesertX sits nicely between Ducati’s more road-oriented Multistrada (“many roads”) models which can also venture off the curb and Ducati’s Scrambler range of more urban machines which can also get dirty. However, the technology and hardware engineered into the DesertX gives it a clear advantage over both of these model lines when it comes to off-road performance, and gives Ducati a new entry into the now popular ADV motorcycle category.

Sporting a 21-inch front wheel and 18-inch rear roll bar – sizes most commonly found on off-road motorcycles – the DesertX offers generous ground clearance, Kayaba long-travel suspension components and two modes. special driving gear specially designed for off-road driving. Other driving modes include variations for riding in the rain, on the highway or in more sporty environments.

The DesertX will also be available with a long list of available options that more adventurous riders need, including an additional second fuel tank, sturdy aluminum travel cases, crash bars and details like heated grips. and seat options. The bike starts at $ 16,795, but designed for a “round the world” (“RTW”) expedition, the price can easily reach $ 20,000.

Power comes from the robust but updated 110 horsepower liquid-cooled “L-Twin” two-cylinder “L-Twin” engine that powers several other motorcycles in the Ducati range. Riders will get speed, route information and other vital information from a vertical LCD display in the cockpit. Dual LED headlights integrated into the motorcycle body light the way forward.

Ducati posted a lengthy video (below) detailing DesertX’s technology and performance attributes, and also showed the bike shredding Middle Eastern sand dunes with experienced riders and desert racers at the controls. The message: it’s a Ducati that can take you where most motorcycles can’t.

The DesertX was born from a Ducati concept bike unveiled at the EICMA Motorcycle Show in Italy in 2019. The gas tank, headlights and overall styling are strongly reminiscent of the Ducati desert racing bikes of the 1980s. The reaction The industry has been swift, with many cyclists calling for the bike to go into production. During the pandemic, Ducati apparently used the downtime to upgrade the DesertX. Deliveries of the DesertX are expected to begin in summer 2022. A full line of Ducati adventure touring clothing will also be available.

Caofen F80: Electric double sport, made in China https://motostays.com/caofen-f80-electric-double-sport-made-in-china/ Wed, 17 Nov 2021 13:02:15 +0000 https://motostays.com/caofen-f80-electric-double-sport-made-in-china/ Along with all of the major motorcycle makers’ releases at EICMA this week, there are also plenty of smaller niche manufacturers showcasing their products. Along with all of the major motorcycle makers’ releases at EICMA this week, there are also plenty of smaller niche manufacturers showcasing their products. One of those manufacturers is Caofen, based in China, with the new dual sport electric F80, offering an emissions-free alternative for off-road fun.

Details on the new F80 (or is it the F8? Marketers have it both ways) are still a bit thin. Currently, Caofen is trying to recruit distributors and resellers around the world, and its main internet presence appears to be this Facebook page. Sifting through the ads on this page, here’s what we can deduce:

  • Caofen claims you can ride all day long on a two hour charging session. Just guessing, that means there is a fast charger involved. The range is said to be 150 kilometers (just under 100 miles), so a “day hike” doesn’t mean cruising the highway.
  • It seems that the one-piece frame has no welds: “To ensure that every location can be perfectly presented, the body is designed seamless. The stiffness of the body has increased by 30%, while adding another layer of protection. The motorcycle body will remain intact even in the event of a parallel fall from a height of 3 meters with a speed of 50 km / h.
  • The 8,000 watt electric motor is supposed to push this bike to 85 km / h (just over 50 mph).
  • There certainly doesn’t appear to be any linkage setup on this rear monoshock, and there’s no mention of progressive damping …
  • It looks like there are F80B and F80L sub-models coming soon.

Overall, the information is a bit muddled which is almost always the case when you get details from these Chinese manufacturers. However, it seems like there has been quite a bit of real effort to design and market this bike, unlike some of the more embarrassing knockoffs from China. It certainly follows the same basic mechanical setup as the other dual electric sports we’ve seen, but there’s nothing wrong with that; you may have noticed that all internal combustion motorcycles also follow the same mechanical setup.

There’s still some work to do, though, if this rear shock doesn’t have some sort of progressive damping setup. Simple details really ruined the reputation of Chinese motorcycles when they were first put back into service in North America (does anyone remember the horrific Lifan shock linkages, which worked backwards to reduce the stroke of the motor? ‘shock absorber ?). If this bike and other made-in-China counterparts don’t get the basics right, nobody’s going to want them.

It seems unlikely that Caofen will become a motorcycle powerhouse based on this visit to EICMA, but it is an important first step for this brand and others, and could potentially pave the way for a disruption in the electric motorcycle scene. For a long time, electric motorcycles have been prohibitive for many buyers. If Chinese factories can make a safe, reliable and affordable battery-powered bicycle, they will find customers. If their products turn out to be crap, then these new electric motorcycles will be abject failures in Western markets, like the Honda knockoffs they produced a decade ago.
