BMW R18 Cruiser Motorcycle India Introductory Price Rs 18.9 Lakh
The BMW R18 is inspired by the design of the 1965 R5 model and is the German brand’s first traditional cruiser in India
BMW Motorrad India today launched its flagship cruise motorcycle in India. The Heritage Series motorcycle is BMW’s answer to motorcycles in the cruiser segment of Indian Motorcycles and Harley Davidson. It will also face Ducati Diavel 1260s and the recently introduced Triumph Rocket 3 GT.
This is BMW’s first attempt to bring a traditional cruising bike to India. The price of the standard edition is Rs 18.9 lakhs and that of the first edition is Rs 21.9 lakhs, ex-sh. Mr. Vikram Pawah, President, BMW Group Indisaid: âThe all-new BMW R 18 is BMW Motorrad’s highly anticipated entry into the cruiser segment. Motorcycle fans and enthusiasts in India are looking forward to this day. “
The BMW R18 draws its inspiration from the design Model 1965 R5 with clues taken from the traditional swingarm, fuel tank, driveshaft, and exposed exhaust pipes. Overall, its design resembles that of a classic old-fashioned bobber that sits on a double cradle steel frame. The frame also covers the beautifully sculpted engine which showcases the impressive presence of the bike.
Its retro look is further accentuated by a round headlight, wide handlebars, chrome-finished muffler and wire wheels. BMW will offer two variants of the R18: an all-black standard version and a first edition with more white stripes and chrome. The First Edition will also feature other distinctive elements such as a seat badge with a âFirst Editionâ clasp, copper lettering logo on the tank and Blackstorm metallic paint.
On the performance side, the R18 is powered by the largest 1802cc twin-cylinder boxer engine shift. This engine is capable of generating 91 hp of power at 4,750 rpm and 158 Nm of maximum torque at 3,000 rpm. This unit is mated to a six-speed gearbox with a shaft drive configuration.
In terms of functionality, the future cruiser benefits from a full LED lighting setup, an analog instrument cluster, heated grips and optional reverse gear. The safety equipment consists of ABS, traction control, hill-hold assist and Automatic Stability Control (ASC). The ACS is complemented by the MSR which prevents rear wheel slip during aggressive downshifting and acceleration. In addition, it has three driving modes: Rain, Roll and Rock.
The suspension functions on the motorcycle are provided by telescopic forks at the front and a mono-shock unit at the rear. Meanwhile, the anchoring tasks are performed by double discs 300mm in diameter and a single disc 300mm in diameter at the rear. The stand on 120/70 R 19 wheels at the front and 180/65 B16 at the rear.
While the segment of high end cruising bikes has not been very popular among the masses. However, BMW aims to attract a fair share of buyers who would certainly like to flaunt a premium bobber on the streets.
